#FromtheSoundboard is a show that usually focuses on concerts regardless of genre. Artist and/or group perfecting the art of “call and response” with its audience. On Wednesday, October 15 starting at 3 am, we are in fundraising mode for #WBAI Pacifica Radio. This week we will offer tickets and feature the #SpokFrevoOrquestra.

Historically a folk music associated with Brazilian Carnival of the Pernambuco region, the brilliance of frevo lies in its evolution, influenced by religion, elaborate dance, and varied instrumentation. Saxophonist Inaldo Cavalcante de Albuquerque, also known as “Spok,” is considered a frevo maestro with an adventurous mind. Drawing from the democratic underpinnings of jazz, Spok uses improvisation as an exercise in expressing freedom, taking this music from the streets of Brazil to the international stage. His 17-member orquestra demonstrates both deeply traditional roots and explicit jazz elements [Lincoln Center Press Release]

#FromtheSoundboard is a show that usually focuses on concerts regardless of genre. Artist and/or group perfecting the art of “call and response” with its audience. On Wednesday, October 8 starting at 3 am, we are in fundraising mode for WBAI Pacifica Radio. This week we will offer tickets and feature the #MingusBigBand.

"When the Mingus Big Band began its Thursday-night residency at New York’s Time Cafe in 1991, Charles Mingus had been dead 12 years, and several members were familiar from the great composer/bassist’s own groups. Two decades later, skilful replacements have emerged to play Mingus’s capriciously complex orchestral jazz, and in the creatively inexact manner he would have wanted. The irascible genius might have yelled for more cliffhanging wildness on this week’s opening show at Ronnie Scott’s, but the band sounded appropriately weighty and agile at once." [John Fordham - The Guardian]

#FromtheSoundboard is a show that usually focuses on concerts regardless of genre. Artist and/or group perfecting the art of “call and response” with its audience. On Wednesday, September 24 starting at 3 am by listener request, we will focus on signer/songwriter #NatalieCole.

The daughter of jazz and pop legend Nat King Cole, Natalie Cole forged a successful career in three phases. She began in the ’70s as a soul-rooted artist, had success in the ’80s with pop-oriented R&B material, and then followed in the footsteps of her father with traditional pop as her foundation from the ’90s through the early 2010s. To quote LL Cool J’s opening lyrics to “Mama Say Knock You Out,” “Don’t call it a comeback/I’ve been here for years.”

~ STOP CAPITALISM. END THE CLIMATE CRISIS. ~
On Monday, September 22nd at 9:00 am, thousands of people will gather at Battery Park in Lower Manhattan to confront the root cause of the climate crisis – an economic system based on exploiting frontline communities, workers and natural resources. On the heels of the largest-ever march on climate change, we have an opportunity to transform the economic system driving this crisis.

Wearing blue to represent the sea that surrounds us, we rise to the steps of the NY Stock Exchange at 12:00 pm, flooding the area with our bodies in a massive sit-in – a collective act of nonviolent civil disobedience – to confront the system that both causes and profits from the crisis that is threatening humanity.
