From the Soundboard is a show that usually focuses on concerts regardless of genre. Artist and/or group perfecting the art of “call and response” with its audience. On Wednesday, April 23, we are will going to focus on the Indo-Jazz-Fusion project called Miles from India.

"It was such a simple concept. Producer Bob Belden (who has directed the Miles Davis reissue series) was talking with Times Square label owner Yusuf Gandhi about Miles’ use of Indian instrumentation during The Complete On the Corner Sessions and wondered aloud what it would sound like if Indian musicians played Miles’ music. Gandhi replied Miles from India, and nearly a year later Belden delivered this brilliant set that not only features a number of India’s finest musicians but a veritable who’s who of Miles’ own sidemen. In perhaps the boldest move, Belden and the musicians looked well beyond Miles’ 1972-1975 sessions with Indian instruments for inspiration, performing tracks from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s.” [Sean Westergaard - All Music Guide]

From the Soundboard is usually a show that focuses on concerts regardless of genre. Artist and/or group perfecting the art of “call and response” with its audience. On April 2 in recognition of what would have been his 75th birthday, we shall focus on the artist that helped evolve the sound of Soul and Popular music, Marvin Gaye.

"One of the most gifted, visionary, and enduring talents ever launched into orbit by the Motown hit machine, Marvin Gaye blazed the trail for the continued evolution of popular black music. Moving from lean, powerful R&B to stylish, sophisticated soul to finally arrive at an intensely political and personal form of artistic self-expression, his work not only redefined soul music as a creative force but also expanded its impact as an agent for social change. “. From the Soundboard is usually a show that focuses on concerts regardless of genre. Artist and/or group perfecting the art of “call and response” with its audience. WBAI is still in Winter Fund Drive mode. Which means that producers (like me) will be asking for tax deductible financial support so that you (the listener) can continue to enjoy WBAI’s programming (like From the Soundboard). On March 19, as we continue to acknowledge Women History Month we will focus on bassist extraordinaire, Meshell Ndegeocello.

"You never know what type of world you’re going to be stepping into when you listen to a new Meshell Ndegeocello album. Those who have followed her career right from her 1993 masterpiece Plantation Lullabies (which is one of the most overlooked and underrated albums of the ‘90s), knows that Meshell rarely, if ever, repeats herself. In fact, this lack of repetition is sometimes so jarring that it’s difficult to follow the path she took from one album to the next. See, for instance, the R&B/soul album Peace Beyond Passion and how it was followed by the super acoustic folk/pop album Bitter, and then how that was followed by the spoken-word hip-hop mixtapeCookie. It’s head spinning”. [Enio Chiola - Popmatters.com]
